  1. libpng for Debian
  2. -----------------

  4. There have been changes in the way libpng is handled. Currently, there
  5. are 2 versions of libpng in Debian at a time : libpng10 and libpng12,
  6. formerly known as libpng2 and libpng3.
  7.  
  8. * The libpng10-0 and libpng12-0 packages contain the runtime for apps
  9.   built with these new libraries.
  10. * libpng2 and libpng3 contain compatibility symlinks to let apps built
  11.   with older versions work correctly.
  12. * libpng10-dev and libpng12-dev are the corresponding development
  13.   packages. You should only use libpng10-dev to build packages using
  14.   gdk-imlib1.
  15. * libpng2-dev and libpng3-dev provide compatibility symlinks to build
  16.   applications still build-depending on those.
  17.  
  18. A package linking with libpng should use as build-depends :
  19. * libpng-dev for small packages not depending on other libraries which
  20.   use or may use libpng.
  21. * libpng10-dev for packages also linking with gdk-imlib1 or gnome 1.
  22. * libpng12-dev for packages also linking with SDL, Gnome 2, Qt, or any
  23.   other library using libpng12.

  25. This version diverges from upstream in 3 ways :
  26. 1) the library is explicitly linked with -lm -lz
  27. 2) libpng.so.3 is just a compatibility symlink
  28. 3) symbols are versioned
